Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Marjoram Leaf Glycerite Liquid Extract. It's a concentrated liquid form of marjoram leaf.

The extract is prepared in glycerin (which also serves as an inactive ingredient) and flavored with chocolate flavor.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Marjoram product and its label doesn't state a use — see Marjoram's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that marjoram works for asthma, Parkinson disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or dysmenorrhea (painful periods). For all of these uses, the research is insufficient to rate it either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Marjoram is generally well tolerated as a food seasoning, but concentrated extracts like this one have limited human safety data. The safety data advises against medicinal or concentrated amounts in pregnancy.

Avoid medicinal doses while breastfeeding as well, since safety hasn't been established. A small number of people have reported skin reactions.

One clinical trial found possible allergic contact dermatitis in children with pre-existing eczema who used products containing sweet marjoram essential oil over an extended period. There's also a case report of one woman whose skin inflammation (perioral dermatitis) worsened after eating marjoram-seasoned food and cleared up when she stopped — it returned when she ate marjoram again.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Marjoram.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 338 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you start, double-check any blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs you take — aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), and similar medications carry a Moderate interaction risk. Also check with your pharmacist if you're on anticholinergic drugs (for Parkinson's disease, overactive bladder) or cholinergic drugs like donepezil (Aricept) — both have Moderate interactions too.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you take blood thinners, anticholinergic drugs, or cholinergic drugs, this product needs a careful look before you start. Even though the research is lab-based, medicinal amounts of marjoram may shift how these medications work.

Pregnant women should avoid medicinal doses. Talk to your pharmacist before adding this to your regimen.

Anticholinergic Drugs

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, using marjoram in medicinal amounts along with anticholinergic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of marjoram or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, marjoram might increase the risk of bleeding when used in medicinal amounts along with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, using marjoram in medicinal amounts along with cholinergic drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of cholinergic side effects.
Cholinergic drugs include bethanechol (Urecholine), donepezil (Aricept), echothiophate (Phospholine Iodide), edrophonium (Enlon, Reversol, Tensilon), neostigmine (Prostigmin), physostigmine (Antilirium), pyridostigmine (Mestinon, Regonol), succinylcholine (Anectine, Quelicin), and tacrine (Cognex).

Marjoram Leaf Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita: Common Questions

Does Marjoram Leaf Chocolate Flavor by TerraVita interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Marjoram Leaf Chocolate Flavor has a known interaction with 338 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Marjoram Leaf Chocolate Flavor contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is marjoram safe to use while I'm pregnant?
Medicinal or concentrated amounts should be avoided in pregnancy because there isn't enough safety data. Food amounts are likely fine, but this product is a concentrated extract, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice based on how much you're planning to take.
Can I use this if I'm breastfeeding?
Safety data for medicinal doses during breastfeeding isn't established. Food amounts are probably okay, but since this is a concentrated extract, check with your pharmacist or doctor before you use it.
Does marjoram actually work for asthma or PCOS?
The evidence we hold is insufficient to say whether marjoram works for asthma, PCOS, painful periods, or Parkinson disease. More research is needed.
What are the side effects of this product?
Skin reactions are the main concern we have data for. A small number of people have had allergic contact dermatitis or skin inflammation after using marjoram or marjoram-containing products — especially those with pre-existing eczema or sensitive skin. If you notice a rash or skin irritation, stop use and talk to your pharmacist.
Why is the dose important when it comes to drug interactions?
The interactions we know about are based on medicinal amounts — that's concentrated doses used for a therapeutic effect. Food amounts are much smaller and less likely to cause problems, but this product is a concentrated extract, so you may be using a stronger dose than you'd get from seasoning your food.
