Marjoram and Abciximab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Abciximab

Abciximab falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, marjoram might increase the risk of bleeding when used in medicinal amounts along with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Abciximab (ReoPro) is a powerful IV antiplatelet medicine given in the hospital, usually during procedures like a cardiac stent placement, to stop platelets from clumping and forming clots. Lab studies hint that marjoram may also make platelets a little less sticky. Stack those two together and, in theory, you could nudge up the bleeding risk, meaning easier bruising, bleeding gums, or oozing at IV and catheter sites.

The honest part: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube and animal research, not real patient studies. Marjoram used as a food spice is very unlikely to matter. Since abciximab is only given in a closely monitored hospital setting, your care team is already watching your bleeding. Just mention any concentrated marjoram supplements or oils to your doctor or pharmacist.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Abciximab page

“Because abciximab (ReoPro) exists to stop platelets from clotting during heart procedures like angioplasty, nearly all of the 218 supplements on this list pull in one direction. Some 202 have antiplatelet or blood-thinning activity of their own, and adding that on top of abciximab can raise bleeding risk.”

  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Aromatherapy for stress

Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints.
