Marjoram and Bivalirudin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Bivalirudin

Bivalirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, marjoram might increase the risk of bleeding when used in medicinal amounts along with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with marjoram and bivalirudin. Bivalirudin is a strong blood thinner given through an IV, usually in the hospital during heart procedures like angioplasty or while doctors watch you closely. Lab studies hint that marjoram, in concentrated medicinal or essential-oil amounts, may make platelets a little less sticky. Stacking that on top of bivalirudin could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk slightly higher (think easier bruising, bleeding gums, or oozing from a puncture site).

The good news: this is only test-tube evidence, and the sprinkle of marjoram in your cooking won't matter. Since bivalirudin is given under medical supervision, just mention any marjoram supplements to your care team so they can keep an eye on you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bivalirudin page

“Bivalirudin (Angiomax) is a strong intravenous blood thinner used during heart procedures like angioplasty, and because bleeding is already its main built-in danger, this list deserves genuine care. All 202 supplements on it interact the same basic way: they thin the blood or blunt platelets themselves, stacking bleeding risk on top of…”

Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints.
