Marjoram and Biperiden

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Biperiden

Biperiden falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, using marjoram in medicinal amounts along with anticholinergic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of marjoram or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Biperiden works by blocking acetylcholine, which is what helps ease the tremor, stiffness, and muscle problems it's prescribed for. Here's the tug-of-war: lab studies hint that marjoram may do the opposite, gently boosting acetylcholine by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, that could chip away at how well biperiden controls your symptoms, and marjoram's own calming effects might be blunted too.

I want to be honest with you, this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, not real patients. Everyday cooking amounts of marjoram are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated capsules or essential oils are where I'd be more careful. Before adding a marjoram supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Biperiden page

“Henbane and scopolia contain the same atropine-family alkaloids biperiden (Akineton) relies on, and taking either with it can stack the drug's effects to a dangerous degree; both carry major ratings and set the tone for a list that deserves genuine care. About Marjoram

What is Marjoram?

Marjoram
  • Digestive upset
  • Sleep and relaxation
  • Respiratory complaints (cough, congestion)
  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Aromatherapy for stress

Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints. Most of its health claims rest on traditional use and small lab or animal studies rather than strong human trials. It is generally considered safe as a food, but concentrated supplements and essential oils should be used with caution and avoided in pregnancy.
