Marjoram and Procyclidine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Procyclidine

Procyclidine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, using marjoram in medicinal amounts along with anticholinergic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of marjoram or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Procyclidine (Kemadrin) works by blocking acetylcholine, which helps ease the tremor, stiffness, and muscle spasms of Parkinson's symptoms or medication side effects. Here's the catch: lab studies hint that marjoram may do the opposite, gently boosting acetylcholine by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, that tug-of-war could blunt how well your procyclidine controls your symptoms.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test-tube work, not real patients, and the small amounts of marjoram you'd sprinkle on food almost certainly won't matter. The bigger question is with concentrated marjoram capsules or essential oils. If you're considering those, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first so we can keep your procyclidine doing its job.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Marjoram

What is Marjoram?

Marjoram
  • Digestive upset
  • Sleep and relaxation
  • Respiratory complaints (cough, congestion)
  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Aromatherapy for stress

Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints. Most of its health claims rest on traditional use and small lab or animal studies rather than strong human trials. It is generally considered safe as a food, but concentrated supplements and essential oils should be used with caution and avoided in pregnancy.
