Mega Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Wonder Labs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Mega Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Labs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Mega Acidophilus contains 5 active probiotic ingredients. The main one is Lactobacillus acidophilus, a live beneficial bacterium.
You're also getting Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus helveticus, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, and a proprietary blend of cultures — all live organisms meant to support your gut. The product also includes citrus pectin, a soluble fiber from citrus fruits.
The remaining ingredients are inactive — cellulose, magnesium stearate, L-ascorbic acid, and silica serve as capsule material and preservatives.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data shows Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bacterial vaginosis, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and Helicobacter pylori infection. For the other ingredients — Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus helveticus, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, and the proprietary blend — the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.
Citrus pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol; for prediabetes and radiation exposure, the evidence is insufficient to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like gas, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur when combined with other probiotics, but these are uncommon.
Because these products contain live organisms, there is a theoretical concern they could cause infection in certain patients, though most documented cases involved translocation from other body sites where the bacteria naturally occur. Pectin from food and typical supplement doses is well tolerated; most people experience only mild gas, loose stools, or cramps.
Rarely, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have occurred in sensitive individuals. Lactobacillus helveticus is generally well tolerated in healthy people but warrants caution in those who are seriously ill or immunocompromised.
Data on long-term safety are limited, so check with your doctor before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before starting if you take antibiotic drugs (especially tetracyclines), digoxin (a heart medication), or lovastatin (a cholesterol drug). Antibiotic drugs may reduce how well the probiotics work, and pectin may reduce how well those antibiotics, digoxin, and lovastatin are absorbed by your body.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, bacterial vaginosis, and high cholesterol. If you take antibiotics, space them several hours apart from this product so the antibiotics don't kill the beneficial organisms.
If you take tetracycline antibiotics, digoxin, or lovastatin, talk with your pharmacist first — pectin may reduce how well these drugs work.

Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Labs contains live probiotic organisms and pectin, both of which interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with antibiotic drugs — both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus helveticus may be killed by antibiotics taken at the same time, reducing the effectiveness of the probiotic. You'll want to space these doses apart.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Pectin in this product may reduce how well your body absorbs several medications. It can decrease absorption of tetracycline antibiotics (by roughly a third in one study) and digoxin, a heart medication, potentially cutting its absorption by more than half.
Pectin may also interfere with lovastatin, a cholesterol drug. All three of these interactions are Moderate severity.
We could not check two of the ingredients — Lactobacillus salivarius and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis — because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 188 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact drugs before you start.

For each ingredient in Mega Acidophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus helveticus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Citrus Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
