What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: biotin, a B vitamin at a 5,000 microgram dose. Biotin plays a role in hair, skin, and nail health, and supports your body's ability to process nutrients.
The capsule also contains vegetable cellulose, gelatin, and vegetable magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency — a real but uncommon shortage of the vitamin in your body. For other uses like hair loss (alopecia areata), seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly, itchy scalp condition), or multiple sclerosis, the evidence doesn't support that biotin helps.
The data we have rates alopecia areata as insufficient evidence to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at high doses, because your body gets rid of excess amounts in your urine. High-dose biotin has rarely been linked to mild diarrhea — two patients taking 300 mg daily reported transient mild looseness.
One case report described a woman who developed inflammation around the heart and lungs after taking biotin 10 mg plus another supplement daily for 2 months, but whether biotin itself was responsible remains unclear, and no similar cases have been reported since. The safety notes advise checking with your doctor before taking high-dose supplements, even though amounts from food and prenatal vitamins are considered appropriate.
