Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: hoodia, 250 mg per capsule. Hoodia is a plant extract used traditionally as an appetite suppressant.
The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients—cellulose, cellulose powder, magnesium stearate, and silica—which help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that hoodia works for obesity. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for this use.
If you're considering hoodia for weight management, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research actually shows and whether it's the right choice for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hoodia comes with limited safety data and some reported side effects. Users have reported minor issues like skin sensation changes, headache, dizziness, giddiness, and nausea.
There's also concern that hoodia may raise blood pressure and heart rate. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications, beta-blockers (heart rate or heart protection drugs), diabetes medications, or insulin. Hoodia may reduce how well blood pressure and heart drugs work, and it may strengthen the blood glucose-lowering effect of diabetes drugs and insulin, raising your low blood sugar risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Mega Hoodia might appeal to someone looking for an appetite suppressant, but the evidence for weight loss is insufficient, and safety data are limited. If you take blood pressure medications, heart drugs, diabetes medications, or insulin, this product poses real interaction risks—your blood glucose or blood pressure could shift unexpectedly.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it to weigh the unknowns against any potential benefit for your situation.

Mega Hoodia 250 mg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mega Hoodia 250 mg by NOW contains hoodia, which interacts with four important medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) and heart rate drugs (beta-blockers)—hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which may reduce how well these drugs work and increase your blood pressure risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hoodia also interacts with diabetes medications and insulin. Research in animals shows that hoodia may boost insulin release and lower blood glucose.
If you take diabetes drugs or inject insulin, combining them with hoodia could strengthen their blood glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). You'd need to monitor your blood glucose carefully.
Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications. Before you start hoodia, run your exact blood pressure meds, heart drugs, diabetes medications, or insulin through the checker below.

For each ingredient in Mega Hoodia 250 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hoodia
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
