Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin powder. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid (a natural pigment) sourced from algae and other organisms.
The tablet also includes several inactive ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and phospholipids — which are used as binders, fillers, and to form the tablet.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for astaxanthin is currently insufficient to make a reliable claim about its benefits. The data we hold covers age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome — and for all of these, we do not have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
You may want to talk with your doctor about what you're hoping to achieve and whether there are other options with stronger evidence behind them.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — a harmless color change from the supplement itself.
At typical doses (6 mg daily), these effects are mild; at much higher doses (40 mg daily), a small number of people have reported severe stomach pain. Because there isn't enough safety data, you should avoid this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're in either situation and looking for an alternative.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you take that are processed by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes. These are Moderate-severity interactions: astaxanthin may speed up how your body breaks down these drugs.
This effect has been observed in lab studies but not yet confirmed in humans — that doesn't mean it won't happen, so it's worth a quick verification.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Natural Double Strength Astaxanthin may be worth considering if you're interested in antioxidant support, but the evidence for specific health claims isn't established yet. If you take any prescription medications, especially ones your doctor has adjusted to a particular dose, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it — the supplement may affect how some drugs work.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not the right time for this product, so discuss your options with your healthcare provider if that applies to you.
