Omega-3 Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by iwi
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Omega-3 against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
Omega-3 is a dietary supplement by iwi with 1 active ingredient. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Omega-3 by iwi
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
iwi Omega-3 contains 8 ingredients, including a blend of omega fatty acids sourced from algae oil. The main active ingredients are eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid — two omega-3 fatty acids your body uses for heart, brain, and immune function.
The product also includes omega-6, omega-7, and omega-9 fatty acids, along with polar lipids (specialized fats found naturally in cells) and chlorophyll for color and possible antioxidant effects. The capsule shell is the only inactive ingredient listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The chlorophyll in this product hasn't been studied enough to know whether it works for herpes, wound healing, shingles, skin cancer, or pancreatitis. Omega-6 fatty acids show mostly weak evidence — research suggests they may not be effective for high cholesterol, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, or child development.
We don't have established evidence ratings for the omega-3s or other fatty acids in this product in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorophyll is generally well tolerated in short-term use, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effect is photosensitization (heightened sun sensitivity); in rare cases, it has caused pseudoporphyria, a blistering condition.
The safety data advise against chlorophyll during pregnancy, and breastfeeding safety is unknown — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing. Omega-6 from food is fine, but the safety of concentrated omega-6 supplements isn't well established, and we don't have pregnancy/breastfeeding ratings for the other omega fatty acids in this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use photosensitizing drugs (especially those used for acne, infections, or cancer) or methotrexate. If your exact medication isn't listed, the search tool on this page lets you verify it against our full interaction data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
iwi Omega-3 is an algae-based omega fatty acid blend with chlorophyll added. If you take photosensitizing medications or methotrexate, you'll want to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a history of sun sensitivity, bring this product to your healthcare provider before taking it.

Omega-3 by iwi Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
iwi Omega-3 has documented interactions through its chlorophyll content.
The most serious concern is with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight) — chlorophyll may add to their effect, raising your risk of severe sun sensitivity and, rarely, a serious blistering condition called pseudoporphyria.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorophyll may also slow how your body clears methotrexate, a medication used for cancer, autoimmune disease, and other conditions. In one case report, a patient's methotrexate levels stayed high longer when taken with chlorophyll; stopping chlorophyll 2 days before the dose prevented the problem.
We could not check several other ingredients in this product — eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, omega-9 fatty acids, omega-7 fatty acids, and polar lipids — because we don't hold interaction data for them. Omega-6 fatty acids, also in this product, showed no documented interactions in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Before you start, use the search tool below to check your exact medications.

Algae Oil
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking algal oil with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with the effects of antidiabetes drugs and reduce their effects.
Most algal oil contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Clinical research in people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking antidiabetes drugs, shows that taking DHA 4 grams daily for 6 weeks increases fasting blood glucose levels by about 18 mg/dL when compared with taking olive oil.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking algal oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Algal oil usually contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There is evidence that fish oil, which also contains DHA and EPA, can modestly lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensive drugs.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, algal oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
The risk of interaction is highest for algal oil containing high amounts (> 2 grams daily) of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), or EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). High doses of EPA or oils containing EPA and DHA can reduce platelet aggregation in humans. However, most algal oil contains very little EPA and larger amounts of DHA. While some conflicting evidence exist, most research shows that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting.
