Both phosphatidyl choline and choline are generally well tolerated at normal doses. At high doses—choline above 3.5 grams daily, or phosphatidyl choline at 30 grams daily—they can cause digestive upset like bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Choline may also cause a fishy body odor. Phosphatidyl choline may increase sweating and itching when taken by mouth.

For pregnancy, choline is important and rated likely safe, but the safety of high-dose supplements beyond what food provides isn't well studied; talk with your doctor about what's right for you. Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.
