Omega Man Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Barlean's
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Omega Man against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Omega Man by Barlean's
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Omega Man contains 9 active ingredients centered on healthy fats and plant compounds. You're getting omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids — different types of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats — plus linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, which are essential fatty acids your body needs.
The product also includes oleic acid (a monounsaturated fat found in olive oil), beta-sitosterol and campesterol and stigmasterol (plant sterols), and phosphatidylcholine (a phospholipid that supports cell membranes). The softgel capsules themselves contain organic flaxseed oil, soy phospholipid concentrate, and organic pumpkin seed oil as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Oleic acid in this product is rated possibly effective for high cholesterol and coronary heart disease — the evidence suggests it may help, but it's not definitive. Beta-sitosterol is rated likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and possibly effective for familial high cholesterol and coronary heart disease.
Phosphatidylcholine is rated possibly effective for ulcerative colitis, but the evidence for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety is insufficient to say whether it works. For the other ingredients in the blend, we don't have effectiveness ratings on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-sitosterol is generally well tolerated by most adults when used short-term, though the most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, and nausea. A small number of people have reported worsened acne, reduced appetite, or flatulence.
One rare case of acute pancreatitis was reported. Phosphatidylcholine is generally well tolerated in food and supplement amounts, but high doses can cause digestive upset — common side effects include altered taste, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when consumed in normal food amounts. During pregnancy, the safety data for concentrated supplements of oleic acid and beta-sitosterol is not well studied — oleic acid amounts from food are fine, but supplement doses lack good data.
Beta-sitosterol supplement use is best avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Phosphatidylcholine is needed in pregnancy, but safety beyond food sources hasn't been well studied, and there isn't enough data on supplement use while breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (medications for high blood sugar), double-check this product with your pharmacist before starting — oleic acid may increase how well they work and could lower your blood sugar more than intended. For the other active ingredients, we hold no interaction data, so we can't flag specific medication types to watch.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Omega Man may be worth considering if you're interested in supporting cholesterol levels and heart health through plant sterols and fatty acids, or prostate health through beta-sitosterol. If you take any diabetes medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — oleic acid in this product may increase the effect of those drugs.
Skip it during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider says otherwise. Have your doctor or pharmacist review your full medication list against the interactions page before you start.

We could not check several ingredients in this product for drug interactions: polyunsaturated fat, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, monounsaturated fat, campesterol, and stigmasterol. Beta-sitosterol and phosphatidylcholine, two other active ingredients, have no documented interactions in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.
If you take any diabetes medication, run it through the interaction checker on this page before starting Omega Man, and let your doctor or pharmacist know you're considering adding it. For each ingredient in Omega Man with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
