Onion as food is generally well tolerated by most people. When used as a concentrated supplement like this one, though, there's much less research.

The data we have shows it's usually tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin, with the most common side effects being stomach pain and heartburn. Rarely, some people experience allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (severe whole-body reaction), throat closing, or migraines triggered by onion's smell.

Large doses of onion powder can cause stomach distress or heartburn, and one case reported esophageal spasm (muscle cramping in the food pipe) from raw onions. Because this is a concentrated supplement and not food, doses used in research are less well studied than everyday onion consumption.

In vitro research shows that onion inhibits platelet aggregation.

Theoretically, taking onion might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
