Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: organic gotu kola, an herb used traditionally in Asian medicine. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, a plant-based shell with no other inactive ingredients.
Gotu kola has been studied for several uses—some show promise (like helping with poor circulation in the legs and wound healing), while others haven't panned out in research so far.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and possibly effective for burn healing.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), radiation burns, cognitive function, and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence either suggests it doesn't work or there simply isn't enough reliable data to know.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach upset and nausea.
Topically, some people develop eczema or allergic skin reactions. The main concern is liver toxicity.
While this is rare, there are case reports of liver damage; however, it's unclear whether gotu kola itself was responsible, and one clinical trial at 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no changes in liver function tests. The safety data during pregnancy advises against use, and not enough is known about safety while breastfeeding—so it's best avoided in both situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, or any other drugs that depress your central nervous system (Moderate interaction). Also confirm it with them if you take any medications known to affect your liver function (Moderate interaction).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have poor circulation in your legs or are looking into wound support, gotu kola may be worth a conversation with your doctor. However, it's not for everyone—especially if you take sedatives, sleep aids, or medications that can affect your liver.
Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on prescription medications.
