What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has 2 active ingredients: organic gotu kola standardized extract and organic gotu kola powder. Both deliver the same plant — gotu kola is a traditional herb used in Asian medicine, and here it comes to you in a tea-bag form.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and burns.
However, for radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), cognitive function, and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence doesn't support benefit or is too thin to judge. The data doesn't establish whether it works for anxiety.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated over the short term when taken by mouth — most people don't report problems. The most common side effects are stomach irritation and nausea.
Rarely, liver toxicity has been reported, though we can't yet say whether gotu kola itself or contaminants were to blame. One clinical trial at 120 mg daily for 6 months showed no liver changes, but quality safety evidence overall is limited.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough data to know if it's safe — traditionally it's been avoided. During breastfeeding, safety is unknown, so it's best avoided.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, confirm with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any CNS depressants — sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, or anesthetics — as gotu kola may strengthen their effects. Also flag any medications your doctor has told you are tough on your liver.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola by Himalaya may help with circulation issues or wound healing, but the evidence is modest. It's generally well tolerated by mouth in the short term, though stomach upset can happen.
The main caution is mixing it with sedatives or liver-stressing drugs — those need your doctor or pharmacist to weigh in first. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your own healthcare provider before starting.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Himalaya's Organic Gotu Kola interacts with medications through its gotu kola content.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, opioids) — gotu kola may boost their sedative effects. The mechanism appears to involve how gotu kola binds to GABA receptors in your brain, which control calming signals.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also has a Moderate interaction with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that stress the liver). Taking gotu kola alongside them might add to that liver burden.
While case reports exist, we can't yet confirm gotu kola itself was the culprit — contamination wasn't ruled out and doses weren't always reported.
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications. Check your exact prescriptions with the tool on this page, especially if you take any sedative or any medication your doctor has flagged as hard on your liver.
