What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: lemon balm extract. In its liquid form, it also contains cane alcohol and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis), stress, and depression according to the evidence we hold. That means some clinical research supports its use for these conditions, but the evidence isn't yet definitive.
If you're considering it for one of these reasons, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied. In trials, dizziness and sedation were reported but didn't occur more often than placebo, and using it with alcohol didn't affect reaction time or thinking.
A rare case report describes heart rhythm changes in someone taking a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
If you're breastfeeding, limited safety information exists — talk with your doctor before using. Long-term safety during either period hasn't been established.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting, check if you take any CNS depressants (like sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or certain pain relievers) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Both carry Moderate severity interactions with lemon balm.
The bottom line

Organic Lemon Balm by Five Flavors Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Five Flavors Herbs Organic Lemon Balm Extract is a single-ingredient liquid that interacts with two main medication categories.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow your brain and nervous system activity) — sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, and some pain relievers can have stronger effects when combined with lemon balm because the herb itself has CNS depressant activity. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lemon balm may also interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy (a Moderate severity interaction). The herb's constituents can bind to thyroid hormone receptors in a way that might reduce how well your thyroid medication works.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications. Before you add this product, run your prescription list through the checker on this page — especially if you take any sedating medications or thyroid replacement hormone.

Lemon Balm Extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
