Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco, a botanical extract supplied as 500 mg per capsule. Pau d'arco comes from the bark of a South American tree and has been used traditionally for various purposes.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica — these are inactive ingredients that help hold and deliver the supplement.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that pau d'arco works for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or dysmenorrhea — all four claims are rated as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research isn't there yet to back those uses.
If you're thinking about pau d'arco for any of these, talk with your doctor about what the current science says and what might help you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at recommended doses, but the safety data in humans is limited. At higher doses — above 1.5 grams daily of lapachol — it may cause anemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased bleeding risk.
Don't use this during pregnancy; the safety data advises against it due to possible harm to a developing baby. The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety information to know it's okay.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and similar medications. Pau d'arco can increase your bleeding risk when combined with these.
No other drug interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pau d'Arco 500 mg is worth avoiding if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications — the bleeding risk is real. The evidence for its traditional uses isn't established yet.
If you're considering this supplement, especially at doses above 500 mg daily or if you're on any blood-thinning medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
