Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pennyroyal product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pennyroyal's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence we hold for pennyroyal doesn't support its use for any of the conditions it's marketed toward—gallbladder disease, gout, insect repellent, common cold, pneumonia, and canker sores all have insufficient reliable evidence to rate. That means we don't have solid clinical data showing it actually works for these purposes.

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pennyroyal carries serious safety concerns. The safety data advises against use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Pennyroyal essential oil is highly toxic and has caused liver failure and death. Even leaf tea—which is milder than the essential oil—can cause dizziness, nausea, and abdominal cramping.

The active compounds in pennyroyal, particularly pulegone and its breakdown product menthofuran, damage the liver. Topically, the essential oil can trigger rashes and skin inflammation.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

We'd steer most people away from pennyroyal altogether given its toxicity profile and lack of proven benefit. If you're considering it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first—especially if you take acetaminophen or have any liver concerns.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are absolute no-go situations.

Pennyroyal Strawberry Flavor by TerraVita: Common Questions

Does Pennyroyal Strawberry Flavor by TerraVita interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pennyroyal Strawberry Flavor has a known interaction with 69 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pennyroyal Strawberry Flavor contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is pennyroyal safe to use while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data rates pennyroyal as likely unsafe in both pregnancy and lactation. Don't use it in either situation.
What are the side effects I might experience?
The herbal tea form typically causes mild effects like dizziness, nausea, and stomach cramping. The essential oil form carries much more serious risks, including liver damage and, in rare cases, abortion. This product is a glycerite extract, so its side-effect profile falls somewhere in that range—but liver toxicity remains a core concern.
Does pennyroyal actually work for colds, gout, or the other conditions on the label?
The evidence we hold isn't strong enough to say yes. All the uses listed—gallbladder disease, gout, insect repellent, common cold, pneumonia, and canker sores—have insufficient reliable evidence to support them.
Why is pennyroyal so toxic?
The main active compounds, pulegone and its breakdown product menthofuran, directly damage liver cells. Pennyroyal essential oil is particularly potent and has caused liver failure and death in documented cases.
Is it safe to use this product with acetaminophen?
No. Both pennyroyal and acetaminophen stress the liver in similar ways, and taking them together increases the risk of severe liver damage. A documented case report describes liver failure when both were used at once. Avoid the combination.
