ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol, others)

Concomitant use of pennyroyal essential oil and acetaminophen might increase the risk of acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity.
Pennyroyal is hepatotoxic and depletes hepatic glutathione levels in a similar manner to acetaminophen. A case report describes hepatic failure in a female who took pennyroyal and acetaminophen concurrently.

This combination pill contains acetaminophen, the same ingredient in Tylenol, and that's the piece that worries me here. Your liver uses a protective substance called glutathione to safely clean up acetaminophen's byproducts. Pennyroyal oil drains that same glutathione supply while also being directly toxic to the liver. So you essentially have two things hitting the liver at once, which can overwhelm its defenses.

There's a real case report of liver failure in someone who took pennyroyal and acetaminophen together, so even though the evidence is anecdotal, I take it seriously. Honestly, pennyroyal oil is dangerous on its own and shouldn't be swallowed at all. Please skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor about safer choices and your acetaminophen dose.
