Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: phosphatidylserine 100 mg. Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid — a type of fat molecule — that's naturally present in your cell membranes.
The inactive ingredients are sunflower oil, the softgel shell itself, maltodextrin, silicon dioxide, mixed tocopherols, and ascorbyl palmitate (used as preservatives and excipients to hold the formula together).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed. Phosphatidylserine is rated possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease.
For athletic performance, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), general cognitive function, and dementia, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
Insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg), and gastrointestinal upset can show up at doses of 200–300 mg per day. There isn't enough safety data to recommend it during pregnancy, so the advice is to avoid it then.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so avoidance is recommended. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in these situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use anticholinergic drugs (medications that block acetylcholine, such as those for overactive bladder or certain poisonings) or cholinergic drugs (such as those for myasthenia gravis, glaucoma, or Alzheimer disease). Both groups have documented Moderate-severity interactions with phosphatidylserine.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Phosphatidyl Serine may be worth considering if you're concerned about age-related cognitive decline or Alzheimer disease, since evidence suggests it's possibly effective for those. However, if you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because it may interfere with how those drugs work.
It's generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, sleep problems, or headaches in some people. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to decide if it's right for you.

Phosphatidyl Serine 100 mg by Carlson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Phosphatidyl Serine by Carlson interacts with two categories of medications through its single active ingredient.
The most serious concerns are Moderate-severity interactions with anticholinergic drugs (medications that block acetylcholine, used for conditions like overactive bladder and certain types of poisoning) and cholinergic drugs (medications that increase acetylcholine, used for myasthenia gravis, glaucoma, and Alzheimer disease). Altogether, these interactions span 219 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Phosphatidylserine is thought to increase acetylcholine levels in your body. With anticholinergic drugs, this may theoretically decrease how well those medications work.
With cholinergic drugs, it may add to their effects, which could amplify both benefits and side effects.
If you take any anticholinergic or cholinergic medication, run it through the interaction checker on this page before starting phosphatidylserine, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's safe to combine.
