ProbioZyme contains 17 active ingredients: digestive enzymes and a probiotic strain. The enzymes—lactase, lipase, cellulase, phytase, xylanase, amylase, glucoamylase, invertase, peptidase, pectinase, protease (three forms), alpha galactosidase, beta glucanase, and hemicellulase—are meant to help break down different types of food.
Bacillus coagulans is a probiotic bacteria (live microorganism) included to support digestive health. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients: rice flour, bamboo extract, vegetarian capsule material, and water.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance—it helps digest the milk sugar lactose. For B. coagulans, the evidence suggests it may help with constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
For everything else in the formula—lipase, phytase, the other enzymes, and B. coagulans for other conditions—the evidence we hold is not yet established or is insufficient to rate. That doesn't mean these ingredients don't work; it means the research data available to us isn't solid enough to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactase is generally well tolerated, though rare cases of allergic reactions have been reported in people handling powdered lactase. Lipase is generally well tolerated in supplement form, but people with serious digestive conditions should use it only under medical guidance.
Phytase is generally considered low-risk in foods, but human supplement data are limited. The protease enzymes are generally well tolerated for most adults, though digestive upset or allergic reactions are possible; rare occupational allergic reactions to airborne protease have been reported.
B. coagulans is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but live organisms in probiotic products carry a theoretical risk of serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis) in people who are severely ill, immunocompromised, have central venous catheters, or are premature infants. Lipase has shown rare serious gastrointestinal effects when given to premature infants.
For pregnancy, lactase is likely safe; phytase, the proteases, and B. coagulans have insufficient data to know either way—talk with your doctor or pharmacist. For breastfeeding, similar gaps exist for most ingredients; lipase and B. coagulans have not been well studied.

Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.
