Meropenem, Vaborbactam falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Coagulans interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in one direction. Vabomere (meropenem and vaborbactam) is a powerful antibiotic given by IV, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. Since Bacillus coagulans is itself a live bacterium, the antibiotic can wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic, making it work less well. It does not weaken your antibiotic or change how well your infection is treated.

The good news is this concern is mostly theoretical, based on lab reasoning rather than strong human studies. If you want the probiotic to have a fighting chance, simply separate the two by at least a couple of hours. Honestly, since Vabomere is usually given in a hospital for a serious infection, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor about whether a probiotic even makes sense right now.

What Is Meropenem and Vaborbactam Injection Used For?

  • Meropenem and vaborbactam injection is used to treat serious urinary tract infections, including kidney infections, that are caused by bacteria. Meropenem is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Vaborbactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying meropenem.

  • Antibiotics such as meropenem and vaborbactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
