Meropenem, Vaborbactam falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Longum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: it works the opposite way from what most people worry about. Vabomere (meropenem and vaborbactam) is a powerful antibiotic given by IV in the hospital to fight serious infections like kidney infections. Its job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that Bifidobacterium longum is itself a live, friendly bacterium, so the antibiotic can't tell the difference and may wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic you swallow.

So this doesn't make your Vabomere weaker or more dangerous. It just means the probiotic may not do much while you're being treated. This is theoretical and based on how the drugs work, not on hard studies. If you want to take B. longum, ask your pharmacist or doctor about timing and whether it's even worth it during treatment.

What Is Meropenem and Vaborbactam Injection Used For?

Brand name: Vabomere

  • Meropenem and vaborbactam injection is used to treat serious urinary tract infections, including kidney infections, that are caused by bacteria. Meropenem is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Vaborbactam is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying meropenem.

  • Antibiotics such as meropenem and vaborbactam injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
