Short term, propolis is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect when taken by mouth is headache; in one trial, about 7% of people taking 250 mg twice daily for 4 months reported mild headache.

When sprayed or applied to skin, sensitive individuals may develop contact dermatitis (skin irritation) or contact cheilitis (lip irritation). Rare but serious allergic reactions are possible, especially if you're sensitive to bee products—propolis can trigger severe reactions in people allergic to bees or honey.

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
