HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pumpkin Seed 2000 mg by SimplySupplements
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed at 2000 mg per capsule. The inactive ingredients are maltodextrin, gelatin, and magnesium stearate — common binders and capsule material used to hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pumpkin seed is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges and can make urination difficult. For other uses — including male-pattern hair loss, interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasite infection, and urinary tract infections — the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate it.
We don't have established effectiveness data for those conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as a food is well tolerated, but concentrated seed supplements are less well studied. The most common side effects from oral pumpkin products are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported. There are also two case reports of temporary hair loss linked to bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high levels of a plant compound called cucurbitacin — thought to be from wild varieties.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements isn't robust enough to say whether they're safe; talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium (a mood stabilizer), check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — pumpkin seed might raise lithium levels in your blood and require a dose adjustment.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pumpkin seed may be worth trying if you have benign prostate enlargement and want a natural option. If you take lithium, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this — your dose might need adjusting.
For other uses, the evidence is too thin to say it'll help. Have your medications reviewed before you start.
