Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: Pycnogenol, a standardized extract from French maritime pine bark, at 100 mg per capsule. The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, stearic acid, and silica — which are just binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pycnogenol shows possibly effective evidence for osteoarthritis and chronic venous insufficiency (a condition where veins in your legs struggle to pump blood back upward). For asthma, the evidence is also rated possibly effective.
However, for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — so this isn't the right supplement if cholesterol control is your goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maritime pine bark extract is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints, dizziness, and vertigo.
Headache has also been reported in a trial. Rarely, severe vertigo occurred.
A couple of case reports mention chest pain and heart failure worsening in patients with existing heart disease, but it's unclear whether the extract caused these or just coincided with them. There isn't enough safety data to recommend this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether it's appropriate for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this supplement, check your medications against these drug types: blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (increased bleeding risk); immunosuppressants (possible loss of effectiveness); and diabetes medications (possible low blood sugar). All three interactions are rated Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pycnogenol may help with osteoarthritis, chronic venous insufficiency, or asthma if those are concerns for you. But if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or immunosuppressants, you need to check with your pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.
It's generally well tolerated, though dizziness can happen.

Pycnogenol French Maritime Pine Bark Extract 100 mg by Life Extension Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pycnogenol French Maritime Pine Bark Extract by Life Extension does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs — this ingredient may increase your bleeding risk. The effect comes from how maritime pine bark extract can slow platelet clumping, though we don't yet know how big this risk is in real practice.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to be careful with immunosuppressants (drugs that calm down your immune system after an organ transplant or for autoimmune conditions) — there's a theoretical risk this extract might reduce their effectiveness. And if you take diabetes medications, maritime pine bark extract might lower your blood sugar too much.
At least one clinical study shows this effect, so you'd need close monitoring and possibly a dose adjustment.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the interaction checker below before you start this supplement.
