Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Nature's Sunshine Red Raspberry is a single-ingredient product — it contains only raspberry leaf in a capsule. There's one inactive ingredient: the capsule itself.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Red Raspberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: eases minor discomfort.
  • We looked for evidence on: Dysmenorrhea, Labor pain, Parturition, Pharyngitis, sore throat, menstrual pain.
  • The closest evidence on file: Red Raspberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Labor pain (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Red Raspberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Parturition, Pharyngitis, Dysmenorrhea.

The evidence on what red raspberry leaf actually does isn't established in the data we hold. We have ratings for aging skin, cardiovascular disease, respiratory tract infections, congestive heart failure, and diabetes — and for all of them, the evidence is insufficient to draw a firm conclusion.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means we don't yet have reliable research backing any of these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Red raspberry fruit is generally well tolerated, though the safety data on the leaf is more limited. The most common side effects — when they occur at all — are diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, and stomach pain, but these don't typically happen at normal doses.

A rare case of occupational asthma from inhaling the powder has been reported, but that's not a concern with capsules you swallow. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are a bit of a mixed picture.

The safety data on red raspberry in late pregnancy isn't well established, so if you're pregnant or considering it, talk it over with your doctor or midwife for personalized guidance. There isn't enough reliable information to know either way whether it's safe while breastfeeding — check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.

Meds to double-check

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Red Raspberry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 135 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — red raspberry leaf might increase bleeding risk. If you're on insulin or other diabetes medications, watch for low blood sugar symptoms and discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking red raspberry leaf with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that red raspberry leaf extract has antiplatelet activity and enhances the in vitro effects of the antiplatelet medication cangrelor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Insulin

Red raspberry leaf might reduce glucose levels in patients being treated with insulin.
In one case report, a 38-year-old patient with gestational diabetes, whose blood glucose was being controlled with medical nutrition therapy and insulin, developed hypoglycemia after consuming two servings of raspberry leaf tea daily for 3 days beginning at 32 weeks' gestation. The patient required an insulin dose reduction. The hypoglycemia was considered to be probably related to use of red raspberry leaf tea.
