In our data, rosemary is rated possibly effective for memory support. For other proposed uses — including abortion, age-related cognitive decline, alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease — the evidence isn't established enough to rate it.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Rosemary is generally well tolerated in normal food amounts. Concentrated extracts and undiluted essential oil require caution.
Topically, allergic reactions and allergic contact dermatitis can occur — likely due to a compound called carnosol — and some people report lip and gum swelling when used in the mouth. Occupational asthma from rosemary dust has been documented in a small number of people exposed in workplace settings.
The undiluted oil and its camphor component may theoretically trigger seizures in susceptible individuals. During pregnancy, food amounts are probably fine, but medicinal doses are rated possibly unsafe, so avoid large or concentrated doses.
For breastfeeding, safety data on medicinal doses is insufficient — food amounts are likely okay, but talk with your doctor before using the supplement.

Rosemary also interacts moderately with diabetes medications and aspirin-type drugs (including choline magnesium trisalicylate and salsalate). Animal research suggests rosemary can lower blood glucose, which could add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of your diabetes drug and risk low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Because rosemary contains salicylates, it may have compounding effects if you're already taking salicylate-containing pain relievers.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, rosemary may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that rosemary inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking rosemary with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that rosemary extract can decrease blood glucose levels in diabetic models. However, research in humans is conflicting. Although rosemary powder decreased blood glucose levels in healthy adults, no change in blood glucose levels was seen in adults with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
Aspirin

In vitro research shows that rosemary induces CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
