Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Lotus product and its label doesn't state a use — see Lotus's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for sacred lotus isn't established in the data we hold. It's been studied for nausea and vomiting, sore throat (pharyngitis), sleep problems, weight, heavy menstrual bleeding, and bleeding itself—but in each case the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it actually works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lotus is common as a food, but its safety as a concentrated supplement hasn't been well studied in humans. The data advises against using medicinal amounts in supplement form.

Allergic reactions—hives and contact dermatitis—have been reported, including a case in a young child after eating lotus root. Don't use this product while breastfeeding; there isn't enough safety data.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of lotus with other antiplatelet drugs might reduce platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding.
Neferine and isoliensinine, constituents of lotus, have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, in vitro. These constituents can inhibit the production of pro-aggregating factors like prostaglandins.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, lotus might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that the ethanolic extract of lotus reduces blood glucose levels and potentiates the effects of injected insulin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)

Theoretically, taking lotus concomitantly with pentobarbital might increase sedation.

Sacred Lotus Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Sacred Lotus Alcohol Free by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Sacred Lotus Alcohol Free has a known interaction with 212 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Sacred Lotus Alcohol Free contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant?
The safety data doesn't say either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you during pregnancy—it's a personal medical decision.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's okay while breastfeeding, so the data advises against it. Talk with your pharmacist about alternatives.
Can lotus extract cause allergic reactions?
Yes. Hives and contact dermatitis have been reported. A young child developed hives after eating lotus root, so watch for any rash or skin irritation if you're allergic to plants.
Does this product actually work for insomnia or nausea?
The evidence isn't established. We don't have enough reliable data to say whether lotus really helps with sleep, nausea, or any of the other conditions it's been studied for.
What's the difference between a food form of lotus and this supplement?
This is a concentrated medicinal extract, not the whole food you'd eat. Lotus is safe as a regular food, but the safety of concentrated supplement doses like this one hasn't been well studied in humans, so it's riskier.
