What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: shark cartilage at 740 mg per capsule. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, vegetable cellulose, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate, which are inert ingredients that help hold the capsule together and allow it to break down in your stomach.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for shark cartilage is mixed. For cancer, it's rated likely ineffective.
For age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, Kaposi sarcoma, osteoarthritis, and psoriasis, there isn't enough reliable evidence to know whether it works. If you're considering it for one of those conditions, the data we hold doesn't support a clear benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, shark cartilage is generally well tolerated, though digestive upset is common—constipation, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and bloating can all happen. You might also notice dizziness, taste disturbances, or fatigue.
Serious side effects are rare but possible and include changes in consciousness, weakness, decreased sensation, and liver inflammation. There isn't enough safety data to recommend this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take immunosuppressants—drugs given after a transplant or for severe autoimmune disease—check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. Shark cartilage may interfere with how well they work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shark cartilage is one to be cautious with: it may interfere with immunosuppressant medications, the evidence for its benefits is weak or absent, and digestive upset is fairly common. If you take any drug that weakens your immune system or you're pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
