Shark Cartilage Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Shark Cartilage against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: shark cartilage. There are also inactive ingredients — gelatin, cellulose, vegetable stearate, and silica — which are the capsule material and binders that hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for shark cartilage is quite limited. It's rated likely ineffective for cancer.
For other conditions it's been studied for — age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, Kaposi sarcoma, osteoarthritis, and psoriasis — there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. The research just isn't there yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth, shark cartilage is generally well tolerated, but digestive side effects are common: constipation, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, bloating, and cramping can happen. You might also notice dizziness, taste changes, or fatigue.
Rare but serious effects reported include altered consciousness, weakness, decreased sensation, liver inflammation, changes in blood sugar, and swelling in the legs. The safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't adequate, so the recommendation is to avoid it during both.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning either, talk with your doctor before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining this with immunosuppressants — medications that reduce immune function after transplants or for autoimmune and certain cancer conditions. Shark cartilage might theoretically interfere with how these drugs work.
The effect hasn't been seen in humans, but the risk is worth confirming before you begin.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shark cartilage is an unproven remedy for most conditions it's marketed for. It may cause digestive upset and dizziness, and it could interfere with immune-suppressing medications.
If you take immunosuppressants — for a transplant, autoimmune disease, or certain cancer therapies — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it. It's not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Shark Cartilage by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Shark Cartilage by Douglas Laboratories interacts with immunosuppressants (medications that weaken the immune system on purpose).
The concern is theoretical — lab evidence suggests shark cartilage might boost immune activity, which could interfere with how immunosuppressive drugs work. This hasn't been observed in actual people, but it's worth knowing if you take these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Immune-suppressing drugs include medications given after organ transplants, some biologics for autoimmune conditions, and certain cancer therapies. If you're on any of these, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting shark cartilage.
Additionally, shark cartilage has been checked against other major drug types and no other interactions are documented in our data. That's not a guarantee none exist — it's just what the research shows so far.
