Skullcap Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Skullcap against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: skullcap extract, derived from the skullcap plant. Skullcap has been used traditionally for calming and nervous system support, though the evidence for specific conditions remains limited.
The liquid is made with certified organic cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that skullcap works reliably for any of the conditions it's been studied for — including epilepsy, stress, stroke, spasticity, contact dermatitis, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The research so far is insufficient to rate it.
If you're considering it for a health concern, talk with your doctor about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Skullcap is often used only short-term, but the safety data is limited and product quality varies, so use it with care and watch how you feel. Animal and clinical research suggests it can cause sedation and cognitive impairment — you may feel drowsy or mentally foggy, especially at higher doses.
The most common side effects reported are cognitive impairment, digestive upset, and sedation. Mild digestive disturbances occurred in around 9% of people taking 350 mg three times daily.
Higher doses (200 mg and above) are more likely to cause sedation and cognitive impairment. Skullcap should not be used during pregnancy — there isn't enough safety data.
It should also be avoided while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use any CNS depressants — sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, some antidepressants, opioid pain relievers, or alcohol. Skullcap can add to their sedating effects, making you drowsier or less mentally sharp.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Skullcap extract is generally well tolerated at lower doses, but evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. The main concern is adding to the effects of sedating medications and alcohol.
If you take CNS depressants or have questions about whether this is right for you, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
