Stress and Relaxation Complex Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Stress and Relaxation Complex against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Stress and Relaxation Complex by Puritan's Pride
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Puritan's Pride Stress and Relaxation Complex has three active ingredients. GABA is a naturally occurring chemical messenger in your brain that promotes relaxation.
Lemon balm (Cyracos) is a plant extract used traditionally for stress relief. Passion flower is an herbal ingredient traditionally used to support sleep and calm anxiety.
The product also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate—which are standard capsule fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product actually does is limited. Lemon balm is possibly effective for stress and depression, and passion flower is possibly effective for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety.
GABA, however, has insufficient reliable evidence for the conditions it's promoted for—anxiety, athletic performance, and others—so we don't know from clinical trials whether GABA supplements work the way you might hope. If you're looking for proven relief, talk with your pharmacist about what the research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
GABA is often well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects are drowsiness, nausea, gastric upset, and muscle weakness.
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though high doses and long-term safety aren't well established; reported side effects are rare and mild (dizziness, sedation). Passion flower is well tolerated short-term but commonly causes drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your medications—especially blood pressure medications (which GABA may lower further), sleep aids and sedatives (which all three ingredients can amplify), thyroid hormone replacements (lemon balm may interfere), and any drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes (passion flower may reduce their effect). If you take any prescription medications, use the medication checker below.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is designed for stress and relaxation, and one ingredient (lemon balm) has some evidence for that. However, the combination of three sedating ingredients means you need to be careful about what else you take—especially blood pressure medications, sleep aids, and other CNS depressants.
If you have thyroid disease or take thyroid medication, lemon balm is a concern. Check your medications with the tool on this page before you start.

Stress and Relaxation Complex by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Puritan's Pride Stress and Relaxation Complex contains three active ingredients that together interact with a significant number of medications.
The most serious concern is with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications): GABA may theoretically increase the risk of excessively low blood pressure when combined with them.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
All three ingredients—GABA, lemon balm (Cyracos), and passion flower—can add to the sedative effects of CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, and certain pain or anxiety medications), which is a Moderate concern for GABA and lemon balm, and Moderate for passion flower. Additionally, lemon balm may interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
Passion flower also theoretically affects how your body processes certain medications: it may reduce the effectiveness of drugs that rely on OATP transporters (a Minor interaction) and might decrease the effects of drugs metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme (also Minor).
No ingredient in this product has been documented to have zero interactions with medications. Altogether, these interactions span 978 individual medications.
Before you start, use the medication checker on this page to look up your specific prescriptions.

Passion Flower
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
GABA
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
Cyracos
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
