Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, there's a small theoretical concern: because these are live organisms, in rare cases they could move from your gut into the bloodstream and cause infection, especially if your immune system is very weak.

Gastrointestinal side effects — like abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea — are possible but uncommon when taking L. acidophilus with other probiotics. Streptococcus thermophilus is also generally well tolerated, but people with weakened immune systems should be careful.

Because probiotics contain live organisms, there's a rare risk of infection in people using central lines or who are severely ill. For pregnancy, the data on L. acidophilus are "possibly safe"; for S. thermophilus, food sources are considered acceptable, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
