What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: taurine 1000 mg per capsule. Taurine is an amino acid your body makes naturally and also gets from meat and seafood; it plays a role in heart and brain function.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (gum acacia, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate), which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence shows taurine is possibly effective for hepatitis and congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart can't pump blood efficiently). For obesity, the available evidence suggests it is possibly ineffective.
The data we hold doesn't establish taurine's effectiveness for other conditions beyond those ratings.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated when used in typical doses for up to one year. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and dyspepsia (indigestion).
Rare cases of allergic reactions have been reported, especially in people with a history of sensitivities to sulfites or sulfur-containing compounds—symptoms can be serious if they occur. Long-term safety beyond one year hasn't been well studied, so the safety notes advise using this supplement only under medical guidance.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data rates taurine as likely safe; taurine occurs naturally in breast milk, though supplement safety during breastfeeding hasn't been thoroughly studied.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) or lithium. Both carry moderate interaction risks with taurine.
No other medication interactions are documented for this ingredient in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may be worth considering if you're interested in support for hepatitis or heart failure, though the evidence is still emerging. If you take blood pressure medication or lithium, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—these are key interactions to avoid.
Most people tolerate it well short-term, but long-term use should happen under medical guidance.

Taurine 1000 mg by NutriCology Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Taurine 1000 mg by NutriCology can interact with certain medications, mainly through its blood-pressure-lowering effects.
The most serious interaction is with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications)—taurine may increase the risk of excessively low blood pressure when combined with them.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine also has a moderate interaction with lithium. Because taurine is thought to act as a mild diuretic, it may reduce how your kidneys clear lithium from your body, potentially raising lithium levels to unsafe amounts.
This is a particular concern for people taking lithium for bipolar disorder.
Altogether, these interactions span 173 individual medications. If you take any antihypertensive drug or lithium, check your exact medication using the search tool below, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting taurine.
