What’s inside
Low disclosure
TriEnza contains 10 ingredient entries, including digestive enzymes and enzyme blends. The ones we have data for are protease (which breaks down proteins), lipase (which breaks down fats), and lactase (which breaks down milk sugar).
The product also lists invertase, glucoamylase, xylanase, diastase, alpha-galactosidase, and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV, all of which work on different carbohydrates and proteins in food. The inactive ingredients are hypromellose, water, microcrystalline cellulose, and medium-chain triglyceride powder — these are fillers and binders that help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase in this product is effective for lactose intolerance — if you have trouble digesting milk sugar, lactase can help. For the other enzymes (protease and lipase), the evidence we have is insufficient to establish whether they work for inflammatory bowel disease or dyspepsia (indigestion).
We don't have effectiveness data for the remaining ingredients in TriEnza.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Protease and lipase are generally well tolerated by most adults, but they may cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people. Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed.
Rarely, people exposed to powdered lactase have developed contact dermatitis or allergic rhinitis — this is mainly an occupational concern, but if you're sensitive to enzymes, it's worth knowing. During pregnancy, protease safety has not been established and should be avoided unless prescribed by your doctor.
Lipase has little safety data in pregnancy, so use only if your doctor advises it. Lactase is likely safe in pregnancy.
For breastfeeding, there's little data on all three — check with your doctor or pharmacist before regular use.
