TriEnza contains 11 active ingredients—a blend of digestive enzymes designed to help break down different components of food. The main ones are protease (breaks down protein), lipase (breaks down fat), and lactase (breaks down milk sugar).
The product also includes cellulase, invertase, glucoamylase, xylanase, beta-glucanase, diastase, dipeptidyl peptidase-IV, and an additional protease 6. The capsule itself is made of hypromellose with microcrystalline cellulose and medium-chain triglyceride powder as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for most ingredients in TriEnza isn't established in the data we hold. Lactase is the exception—it is effective for lactose intolerance, helping your body digest milk sugar.
For the other enzymes, the evidence is either insufficient (protease, lipase for inflammatory bowel disease and indigestion) or not on file for us to review (cellulase, invertase, glucoamylase, xylanase, beta-glucanase, diastase, and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV). How safe is it?
Well-documented data
TriEnza is generally well tolerated by most adults, though protease and lipase may cause mild digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people. Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed.
Rarely, people have had allergic reactions to proteolytic enzymes after airborne or topical exposure—and in case reports, occupational exposure to the enzyme pepsin has caused allergic nasal symptoms or asthma. If you have a serious digestive condition, use only under medical guidance.
For pregnancy, the safety data is limited. Protease should be avoided during pregnancy unless prescribed by your doctor.
Lipase has little safety data in pregnancy, so use only on medical advice. Lactase is likely safe during pregnancy.
For breastfeeding, protease and lipase are not recommended without medical advice due to limited data, whereas lactase acts only in the gut—still check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Safety data for the other ingredients during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not on file.
