TriEnza Chewable is a blend of 13 digestive enzymes and ingredients meant to help break down food. The active components include Xylitol (a sugar substitute), Lactase (an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar), Lipase (a fat-digesting enzyme), and Protease (a protein-digesting enzyme), along with several other enzymes like Amylase, Glucoamylase, Invertase, Peptidase, Diastase, and DPP IV.
It also contains Beta-Glucanase, Cellulase, and Xylanase. The product comes as a chewable tablet with inactive ingredients like fructose, natural lemonade and pomegranate flavors, and cellulose-based binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence on hand is limited. Xylitol is likely effective for preventing cavities (dental caries) and possibly effective for middle ear infection (otitis media), though data on its other uses—including dry mouth and cystic fibrosis—is insufficient.
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance. For Lipase and Protease, we don't hold effectiveness ratings for their roles in digestion or for the other conditions the product may target.
The evidence backing the full enzyme blend for general digestive support isn't established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Xylitol is generally well tolerated in food amounts, though higher doses (30–40 grams) can cause diarrhea, gas, and abdominal sounds; it's also highly toxic to dogs. Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed.
Lipase has no reported adverse effects in adults, though safety data on supplemental use in pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited. Protease is generally well tolerated for most adults but may occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions; it should be avoided in pregnancy unless prescribed.
A rare allergic reaction to protease (occupational exposure to airborne pepsin has caused allergic rhinitis or asthma) has been documented. One case of anaphylaxis to xylitol in a young child has been reported.

Formula
TriEnza includes DPP IV (dipeptidyl peptidase 4) enzyme activity which, when combined with other proteases, aids in the breakdown of casomorphin (from casein) and gluteomorphin (from gluten).
Suggested/Recommended/Usage/Directions
Suggested use: Four (4) tablets at the beginning of each meal. Fewer tablets may be taken for smaller meals. Two (2) TriEnza Chewables are equivalent to one (1) TriEnza in capsule form. Use care not to inhale enzyme powder. TriEnza may be taken with other Houston Enzymes products.
Storage
Keep container closed and store at room temperature or in freezer, but do not place in refrigerator due to humid conditions.
