They're meant to help break down proteins and support whole-body enzyme function. The product also includes inactive ingredients like hypromellose, gellan gum, microcrystalline cellulose, and medium-chain triglycerides as capsule material and flow agents.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for most of these enzymes is limited. Chymotrypsin is rated effective for cataracts, but for everything else in this product — sprains, wound healing, burns, osteoarthritis, and several other conditions — the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether these enzymes actually work.
The effectiveness of papain, bromelain, protease, and trypsin for their listed uses has not been established in the data we have.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These enzymes are generally well tolerated short-term in most adults, though digestive upset can happen. Protease, papain, and bromelain may rarely cause allergic reactions, including hives, itching, or respiratory symptoms in sensitive people — particularly with airborne exposure.
Chymotrypsin rarely has caused anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction). Trypsin and papain can cause nausea, heartburn, and stomach pain when taken by mouth, especially in combination with other enzymes.
Papain at high doses may rarely cause severe gastritis or esophageal perforation. During pregnancy, safety data is not established for any of these ingredients; the facts advise against use unless prescribed by a doctor.

Suggested use: Adults take 2 capsules per day on an empty stomach (45 minutes before meals or 2 hours after with water). Intensive use: Adults take 2 capsules 2 or 3 times per day on empty stomach gradually increasing to maximum of 6 capsules per day.

Bromelain
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Bromelain may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
There is one case report of a patient experiencing minor bruising while taking bromelain with naproxen. Bromelain is thought to have antiplatelet activity. Whether this interaction is of concern with topical bromelain is unclear. Interference with coagulation of burn wounds has been reported in a patient receiving bromelain-based enzymatic debridement. However, observational research has found that topical bromelain debridement is not associated with increases or decreases in laboratory markers of coagulation when compared with surgical debridement.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, bromelain might increase levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Laboratory research suggests that bromelain might increase the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. However, a study in healthy adults reported no difference in tetracycline plasma levels when a 500 mg dose was taken with or without bromelain 80 mg.
Papain
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, papain might increase the effects and side effects of warfarin.
In one case report, a patient previously stable on warfarin was found to have an international normalization ratio (INR) of 7.4, which was attributed to ingestion of a supplement containing papain from papaya extract.
Pancreatin
Acarbose (Precose, Prandase)
Theoretically, pancreatic enzyme products may reduce the effects of acarbose.
The digestive enzymes present in pancreatic enzyme products may break down acarbose, reducing its effects.
