Vision Matters Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Bricker Labs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Vision Matters against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vision Matters contains 3 active ingredients. Zeaxanthin and lutein are carotenoids, plant pigments that accumulate in the eye's macula (the part responsible for sharp central vision).
Extra virgin olive oil is included as a carrier and to help your body absorb the fat-soluble carotenoids. The softgel capsule also holds inactive ingredients — gelatin, glycerin, marigold flower extract, beeswax, paprika fruit extract, purified water, sunflower seed lecithin oil, and caramel — that form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Lutein also shows possible effectiveness for AMD and cataracts.
The evidence for either ingredient in age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, or other conditions the data lists is insufficient to rate. Extra virgin olive oil's effectiveness for the conditions listed — osteoporosis, indigestion, exercise-related infections, shingles, flu, and osteoarthritis — is not established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Zeaxanthin and lutein are both rated likely safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, though the safety data focuses on food sources and typical supplement doses rather than concentrated supplements. The facts note that supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding for these two ingredients is not well studied, so caution is advised — talk with your doctor before using this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Extra virgin olive oil from food is very safe, but concentrated supplement forms are less studied; the facts list headache and stomach discomfort as the most common side effects reported in trials, and one person reported skin and acne after using olive leaf extract. Olive tree pollen can trigger seasonal respiratory allergy in sensitive people.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your antidiabetes medications before taking Vision Matters. Zeaxanthin may lower blood sugar, and combining it with diabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, and others) could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
No other documented interactions exist for the ingredients we hold data on, but verify your specific medications using the search tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in eye health and have age-related macular degeneration or cataracts, this product's zeaxanthin and lutein may be worth considering. If you take diabetes medications, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the zeaxanthin in this product can lower blood sugar and might amplify your medication's effect.
Before you start, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any other medications, talk it over with your own healthcare provider.

Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
