Alfalfa is generally well tolerated in small amounts, but digestive side effects are common: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, gas, and bloating were reported in several case studies, especially early on. Rarely, chronic use can trigger a lupus-like syndrome or skin reactions (dermatitis).

Wheatgrass is usually well tolerated, though nausea, loss of appetite, and constipation have been reported. It can trigger allergic reactions in people sensitive to wheat — a major food allergen in the United States.

Alfalfa is rated possibly unsafe in pregnancy because of its estrogen-like effects, and there's not enough safety data to recommend supplement doses while breastfeeding.
