What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried wild cherry bark extract. It's a concentrated liquid form, so the extract is mixed with ethyl alcohol, distilled water, and vegetable glycerin as inactive ingredients to preserve it and make it drinkable.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't have effectiveness data on file for wild cherry in our current records, so we can't speak to whether it works for cough or any other purpose based on the evidence we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild cherry is generally considered safe in the small amounts you'd find in over-the-counter cough products, but here's the catch: the plant contains compounds that can break down into cyanide (a poison). Large amounts can cause cyanide toxicity, which is serious and potentially fatal.
A documented case involved a woman who drank about 300 grams of wild cherries steeped in alcohol and developed headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and severe difficulty breathing; she eventually became unresponsive and required hospitalization. The safety data advises against use while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.
There's also a caution about avoiding large amounts due to the cyanide risk.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 — this includes cholesterol medications like lovastatin and antifungals like ketoconazole and itraconazole. The interaction is rated Moderate, meaning wild cherry could raise the blood levels of these drugs.
Use the medication checker below to see if any of your prescriptions are affected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wild Cherry by Herbalist & Alchemist may be fine in small doses, but the cyanide concern means you shouldn't treat it as something you can take freely or in large amounts. Before starting, check your medications — especially cholesterol drugs, antifungals, and anything metabolized by CYP3A4.
If you're breastfeeding, skip it. Talk to your pharmacist about whether this product makes sense for you and what dose would be safe.

Wild Cherry by Herbalist & Alchemist Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Wild Cherry by Herbalist & Alchemist is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with a significant group of medications.
The main concern is with drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (cytochrome P450 3A4). In vitro research shows wild cherry can slow how your liver processes these drugs, which might raise their blood levels.
However, this hasn't actually been reported in human patients yet — the risk is theoretical at this point. Altogether, these interactions span 633 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Drugs affected by CYP3A4 include cholesterol medications like lovastatin, antifungals such as ketoconazole and itraconazole, and many others. The severity is rated Moderate.
Because we have limited human evidence, we can't predict exactly how strong this effect would be in you, but it's worth checking before you start, especially if you take any of these medications regularly.
To find out if your exact drugs are on that list, use the medication interaction checker on this page.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
