Wild Cherry Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wild Cherry against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wild cherry. Wild cherry is included in some cough syrups and lozenges, but this is a liquid extract form.
The inactive ingredients are grain alcohol and deionized water.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't hold effectiveness data for wild cherry in our records, so we can't tell you what the evidence says it does or doesn't do.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild cherry is generally considered safe in the small amounts found in commercial cough products, but there's a serious catch: the plant contains compounds that can form cyanide when ingested in large quantities. Large amounts can cause cyanide toxicity, which can be fatal — a documented case involved a person who consumed about 300 grams of wild cherries steeped in alcohol and presented with headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, severe breathing trouble, and eventually lost consciousness.
Because of these cyanide-forming compounds, safety has not been established during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the data advises against use in both. Stick to small, typical doses only.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any medications you take that are broken down by the enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) — this includes certain cholesterol medications, antifungals, and many others. Because this interaction has only been observed in test tubes and not in humans, the real-world risk is uncertain, but it's worth confirming your specific drugs aren't affected.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're using this as a cough remedy in normal amounts, it's generally well tolerated — but wild cherry does carry a documented moderate interaction with hundreds of medications that your liver breaks down. Check your exact medications with the tool on this page before you start.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Talk with your doctor or pharmacist; the safety data advises against it.
Never use large amounts.

Wild Cherry by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Village Vitality's Wild Cherry liquid contains one active ingredient, wild cherry, which has a documented moderate interaction with a large class of medications.
In vitro studies suggest wild cherry can inhibit an enzyme called cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), which your body uses to break down many common drugs. Theoretically, this could raise blood levels of those medications — but so far, this interaction hasn't been reported in actual patients.
Still, it's worth checking.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 633 individual medications. The drugs most likely affected include certain cholesterol medications (like lovastatin), antifungals (like ketoconazole and itraconazole), and many others metabolized by that enzyme.
Because the interaction has not been observed in humans and the evidence is limited to lab work, the actual risk is unclear — but given the medication count, you'll want to run your specific drugs through the checker below before you start.

Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes. Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and others.
