What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wild Yam against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: fresh Wild Yam root in liquid form. Wild yam has been used traditionally to support various aspects of women's health, though we'll cover what the evidence actually shows.
The liquid is preserved with 40% grain alcohol and purified water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for wild yam is mixed and often underwhelming. For menopausal symptoms — probably its most common use — the data rates it as possibly ineffective, meaning the studies don't support that it works well for hot flashes or other menopause complaints.
For gallbladder disease, sexual dysfunction, period pain, and infertility, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say one way or the other. If you're considering this for any of those purposes, talk with your pharmacist about what the research actually backs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wild yam is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but we don't have good long-term safety data. The most common side effects are fever, headache, upset stomach, and vomiting — especially at higher doses.
Rarely, it can cause anaphylaxis (a serious allergic reaction). One case report described temporary vision loss in someone taking a multi-ingredient formula that included wild yam, though it's unclear whether wild yam was responsible.
We don't have enough safety data to recommend wild yam during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — the safety information advises against both.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're on any estrogen-based medication — birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, or estrogen patches — double-check with your pharmacist before starting wild yam. It may interfere with how those drugs work, raising or lowering their effects.
Use the medication checker on this page to verify your specific prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wild yam might be worth considering if you're exploring traditional remedies for women's health, but know that evidence for its effectiveness is thin. If you take estrogen-based medications — birth control, hormone therapy, or anything similar — check with your pharmacist first.
For pregnancy or breastfeeding, avoid it and talk with your doctor about safer alternatives.

Wild Yam by Herbs Etc. Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbs Etc.
Wild Yam is a single-ingredient liquid that does interact with one important drug type: estrogens. Wild yam can theoretically raise or lower how your body responds to estrogen — it shows both estrogen-like and anti-estrogen effects in lab studies.
If you're on hormone therapy or birth control pills, this matters, because wild yam might weaken or strengthen what those medications do.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we've documented interactions with estrogens, the practical risk remains uncertain because wild yam's hormone effects aren't fully understood in people. Altogether, these interactions span 41 individual medications.
Before you start this supplement, check your exact estrogen-based medications — whether they're for menopause, birth control, or hormone replacement — using the search tool below. Your pharmacist or doctor can tell you whether the timing, dose, or monitoring needs to change.
