Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture with Estrone (Ortho-Est) and wild yam. Despite what some labels claim, your body doesn't turn wild yam's diosgenin into hormones, so it won't act like extra estrogen on its own. The concern is different: in lab dishes, wild yam has shown both estrogen-like and anti-estrogen-like activity. That means it could theoretically nudge your hormone therapy in either direction, making it work a little stronger or a little weaker.

To be clear, this is a theoretical interaction based on test-tube data, not real patient reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if your estrogen effects shift (more breast tenderness, bloating, and headaches, or a return of menopausal symptoms), mention it. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding wild yam.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Estrone page

“Hormone therapy lives or dies by a steady blood level, and estrone (Ortho-Est), an estrogen taken mostly for menopause symptoms, is no exception, so this list calls for genuine care. The two major-rated entries among the 77 both change how much estrone your body actually gets: grapefruit raises estrogen levels by blocking the enzyme th…”

About Wild Yam

What is Wild Yam?

  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Hormone balance (popular belief)
  • Digestive cramps
  • Joint and muscle discomfort

Wild yam is a root traditionally used for menopausal symptoms, cramps, and as a so-called 'natural' hormone supplement, but solid human evidence for these uses is lacking. Despite popular claims, your body cannot convert its compounds into hormones like progesterone, so creams marketed that way usually don't work as advertised. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
