Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with your PMB tablets, which combine conjugated estrogens (the hormone part) with meprobamate (a calming medicine). In test tube studies, wild yam has shown both estrogen-like and anti-estrogen-like activity. That means, in theory, it could nudge your estrogen therapy in either direction, either adding to it or working against it. Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on lab data, not real cases in people, so I don't want you to panic.

Practically, if wild yam tipped things one way, you might notice more estrogen-type effects like breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting, or in the other direction, your menopausal symptoms could creep back. Since the effect is unpredictable, I'd just run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding wild yam.

About Wild Yam

What is Wild Yam?

  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Hormone balance (popular belief)
  • Digestive cramps
  • Joint and muscle discomfort

Wild yam is a root traditionally used for menopausal symptoms, cramps, and as a so-called 'natural' hormone supplement, but solid human evidence for these uses is lacking. Despite popular claims, your body cannot convert its compounds into hormones like progesterone, so creams marketed that way usually don't work as advertised. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
