What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wintergreen against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted wintergreen extract. Wintergreen oil is the compound responsible for its effects; it's rich in methyl salicylate, the same type of compound found in aspirin.
The liquid is made with vegetable palm glycerin and pharmaceutical-grade alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for wintergreen isn't established. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for back pain, muscle soreness, or joint pain.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the data we have isn't strong enough to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Topical use of wintergreen oil appears generally well tolerated on the skin, but don't cover treated areas with occlusive dressings (like plastic wrap) because that can boost absorption of methyl salicylate to unsafe levels. Never swallow wintergreen oil — it's extremely toxic by mouth and can cause salicylate poisoning, with symptoms including headache, ringing in the ears, and confusion.
Contact dermatitis (irritant or allergic skin reaction) is possible with topical use. The safety data for this product during pregnancy and breastfeeding is very limited — pregnancy data isn't on file, and lactation is rated likely unsafe.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you start, double-check warfarin (Coumadin) and aspirin with your pharmacist using the tool below. Warfarin is a Major interaction — wintergreen can increase bleeding risk.
Aspirin is Moderate — the risk of salicylate toxicity goes up when combined.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take warfarin or aspirin, talk with your pharmacist before using wintergreen — the interaction risk is real. Topical use on unbroken skin can be reasonable for some people, but the oral form and swallowing any amount of the oil carries serious toxicity risk.
For pregnancy or breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist first.

Wintergreen by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Wintergreen by Hawaii Pharm is a liquid extract that interacts with blood thinners and pain relievers.
The biggest concern is warfarin (Coumadin). Wintergreen oil contains methyl salicylate, which can be absorbed through the skin and boost warfarin's blood-thinning effect — raising your bleeding risk.
Case reports document increased INR (a measure of how thin your blood is) and bleeding problems when people used topical wintergreen products alongside warfarin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Aspirin is a moderate concern for the same reason: wintergreen oil's salicylate content can add to aspirin's effects, especially if you use large amounts, cover the area, or apply it for a long time. This raises the risk of salicylate toxicity — symptoms like headache, ringing in the ears, and confusion.
Use the search tool on this page to check your exact medications before starting wintergreen. Altogether, these interactions span 37 individual medications.

wildcrafted Wintergreen extract
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Using wintergreen oil topically might increase the effects and adverse effects of warfarin.
Several case reports show that concomitant use of topical wintergreen oil-containing products and warfarin can increase INR and bleeding risk due to systemic absorption of the methyl salicylate contained in wintergreen oil. Topical analgesic gels, lotions, creams, ointments, liniments, and sprays can contain up to 55% methyl salicylate.
Aspirin
Using wintergreen oil topically in large amounts, with occlusive dressings, or for prolonged periods of time might increase the risk of additive salicylate toxicity when used with aspirin.
Wintergreen oil contains methyl salicylate. Topical analgesic gels, lotions, creams, ointments, liniments, and sprays can contain up to 55% methyl salicylate.
