Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?

  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Sweet Annie's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Sweet Annie for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Wormwood is possibly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) according to the evidence we have. For other uses—including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, malaria, and osteoarthritis—the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it.

Because wormwood is used short-term and preparation quality varies widely, it shouldn't take the place of proven treatments for any condition.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Taken by mouth, wormwood extract is generally well tolerated, though nausea and vomiting can occur. Liver damage is rare but has been reported; one person developed hepatitis after taking a wormwood compound for 10 days, though symptoms cleared within two weeks of stopping.

A mild allergic reaction—rash and cough—has also been reported, as well as tongue numbness or throat itching when low doses are taken under the tongue by people sensitive to wormwood. Do not use wormwood during pregnancy because of the risk of harm to the developing baby.

There isn't enough safety data to use it while breastfeeding either. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether wormwood is right for you.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Sweet Annie.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 893 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on any drug that can stress the liver, or any medication broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6—which includes many common prescriptions. These are Moderate-severity interactions and the product contains wormwood, which affects all three of these categories.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Wormwood may help with hay fever symptoms, but the evidence is limited and it shouldn't replace proven treatments. The main concern is how it affects your liver and how it changes the way your body processes many medications—which means you need to check your specific drugs before starting.

Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you take medications metabolized by your liver.

Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
