What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: wild harvested yin chen extract, a traditional herbal preparation. The extract also includes vegetable palm glycerin and artesian Hawaiian water as inactive ingredients that help deliver the yin chen.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold does not establish whether yin chen works for any of its traditional uses. It's been used historically for asthma, biliary (bile duct) disorders, liver disease, painful periods (dysmenorrhea), and metabolic syndrome, but the research backing it up is insufficient.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work—it means the data we have aren't strong enough to rate it one way or another.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Yin chen is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though human safety data are limited because it's used mainly in traditional medicine. The most common side effects are abdominal distension, dizziness, and nausea.
Rare but serious effects include heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), fainting, numbness, and tremors—particularly at higher doses (15–30 grams). One case report linked a combination of yin chen and another herb to a dangerous heart rhythm collapse, though it's unclear which ingredient was responsible.
There isn't enough safety information for pregnancy. Artemisia plants (yin chen's botanical family) are advised against during pregnancy based on limited data.
Similarly, there's no reliable safety data for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided while nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, check your medications against these types: pentobarbital and other central nervous system depressants (sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, opioids, antihistamines, alcohol). Yin chen may amplify their sedating effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Yin Chen Non-Alcohol is a single-ingredient herbal extract with a long history in traditional medicine, but modern evidence for its effectiveness isn't established yet. If you take any sedating medications—sleep aids, anxiety drugs, pain relievers, or anything that slows your nervous system—you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before using it, because yin chen may intensify drowsiness and coordination problems.
It's not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Yin Chen Non-Alcohol by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Yin Chen Non-Alcohol by Hawaii Pharm contains wild harvested yin chen extract, which interacts with central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants) and pentobarbital specifically.
The most serious concern is with pentobarbital (a sedating barbiturate medication): animal research shows yin chen can lengthen sleeping time when combined with it, meaning the drug's effects on drowsiness and sedation could be amplified.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beyond pentobarbital, yin chen has documented moderate interactions with the broader class of CNS depressants—medications that slow brain activity, including sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids, and alcohol. Animal studies show yin chen itself has sedative properties and can reduce motor activity and impair balance.
Combining it with other depressants could intensify drowsiness, dizziness, and coordination problems.
Although we could check yin chen, we hold no data on the inactive ingredients (vegetable palm glycerin and Hawaiian water). Before you start this product, use the search tool below to check your exact medications—especially anything prescribed for sleep, anxiety, pain, or seizures.
