💊How it's taken▾
The right way to use these products depends on which form you have. All are applied to the skin only — never swallowed.
- Creams, ointments, and gels (such as Icy Hot, Arthritis Hot, Cramergesic, ASYSTEM Radical Relief Gel Roll-On): massage a thin layer into the affected area up to 3–4 times daily; wash hands after each use.
- Medistik Dual Hot And Cold spray: spray thinly and evenly, massage in until it disappears, up to 3–4 times per day.
- Skin patches (such as Salonpas Pain Relief, HealthWise Pain Relief Patch): apply to a clean, dry area and leave on for the number of hours stated on your specific product — this varies by brand. Do not exceed the daily patch limit on your label.
- Eagle Brand liquid (topical solution): apply to the affected area as directed on the product label.
Always follow your product's label or your prescriber's instructions. Do not use these products more often or for longer than the label directs.
🤒Side effects — in detail▾
Most people tolerate these products well, but some skin reactions can occur at the site of application:
- Burning or warming sensation (common, usually fades within a few days of regular use)
- Stinging sensation, especially noticeable with Medistik Dual Hot And Cold spray
- Skin redness or irritation
- Itching or rash
Rare but serious skin burns have been reported with products of this type — if you experience severe burning, pain, swelling, or blistering where you applied the product, stop using it immediately and get medical help. Also stop use and see a doctor if a rash or significant skin irritation develops, or if your symptoms worsen or don't improve as expected.
⚠️Warnings & precautions▾
- Risk of serious skin burns: Rare but real — do not apply heat (heating pads, direct sunlight) to the treated area, and never bandage the area tightly after applying.
- External use only: Never swallow these products. If accidentally swallowed, contact a Poison Control Center right away.
- Do not use on broken or damaged skin: Avoid wounds, rashes, or irritated skin.
- Aspirin/salicylate allergy: Because methyl salicylate is related to aspirin, people with an aspirin or salicylate allergy should not use these products without talking to a doctor first.
- Pregnancy (especially after 20 weeks): Do not use methyl salicylate at 20 weeks of pregnancy or later unless a doctor specifically directs it — it may harm the unborn baby or cause delivery complications.
- Heart attack and stroke risk: Using more than directed or for longer than directed may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
- Avoid using with other topical pain-relief products on the same area at the same time.
- Eye contact: Avoid getting product in your eyes or on mucous membranes. If eye contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

- Other topical analgesics (pain-relief skin products): Do not use two topical pain products on the same area at the same time — this increases the risk of skin irritation and burns.
- Heating pads or local heat: Applying heat over the product raises the risk of serious skin burns — always avoid.
- Diuretics (water pills): Ask a doctor before using these products if you take a diuretic, as salicylates may interact.
- Aspirin and salicylate-containing medications: If you already take aspirin or other salicylates, speak to your doctor before adding a topical methyl salicylate product.

- Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin, salicylates, or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) unless your doctor says it is okay.

- Tell your doctor if you take a diuretic (water pill).
- Tell your doctor if you have a history of stomach bleeding.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health care professional before use. At 20 weeks of pregnancy or later, do not use methyl salicylate unless your doctor specifically directs it.
- Salonpas Pain Relief patch: not for use in anyone under 18 years old.
- Most creams and ointments: children under 12 should not use without asking a doctor first.
- HealthWise Pain Relief Patch and BT Pain Relief patch: not for children under 2 years of age.
- Keep all products out of reach of children.
🚑If you take too much▾
These products are meant for skin use only, and accidental swallowing is a medical emergency. If any of these products is put in the mouth or swallowed — especially by a child — contact a Poison Control Center or get emergency medical help right away. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
